Legionella alert at Scottish Parliament - 03-07-2009The Scottish Parliament has had a second legionella bacteria discovery, it has been revealed this week.
The bacteria, which can cause Legionnaires’ Disease, was found during tests at Queensbury House and Canongate carried out in January. An earlier discovery of legionella back in June 2008 was only revealed this month, leading to criticism of the authorities’ handling of the situation.
Despite the recent discovery, parliamentary leaders have insisted that there is no health risk to members or the public as the drinking water supply has not been affected.
“The independent water quality expert has confirmed that the immediate actions we have taken are appropriate and that the water supply is safe,” said Holyrood Chief Executive Paul Grice. “Beyond that, facilities management will be working with our experts to establish if any longer-term measures need to be taken.”
