Luton hospital in legionella scare - 18-06-2009

A Luton-based hospital has been forced to close several bath and shower facilities following the discovery of legionella bacteria in water samples. The bacteria, identified during a routine legionella management inspection, has affected the surgical and maternity wards at Luton & Dunstable Hospital (L&D).

Patients affected by the hospital’s decision to close the facilities have received alternative washing arrangements until the water supply is decontaminated. As well as closing the affected washing areas the hospital has also taken the precautionary step of providing bottled water to patients during the closure period.

No cases of Legionnaires’ Disease, the potentially fatal form of pneumonia caused by legionella bacteria, have been reported at the hospital

“Patient safety is our highest priority and the baths and showers in the areas affected will therefore remain closed for the next couple of days while decontamination work is being carried out,” said L&D chief executive Stephen Ramsden.
